Abstract

Background: The most common superficial fungal skin disease, which has become a global health problem, is Tinea versicolor or Pityriasis versicolor. Personal hygiene behaviors were performed to maintain personal cleanliness and health. Several behaviors increased the risk of Pityriasis versicolor among scavengers, including not showering immediately after work, rarely changing work clothes, and using damp towels. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and the occurrence of Pityriasis versicolor among scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill site. Methods: This study employed an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 48 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, selected through total sampling. Personal hygiene data were collected using questionnaires, while data on P. versicolor were obtained through clinical symptom examinations and additional tests using a Wood’s lamp. The collected data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using SPSS software. Results: The prevalence of P. versicolor among scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill was found to be 22.9%. Bivariate analysis using Fisher’s Exact test showed a significant relationship (p<0.05) between personal hygiene and the occurrence of P. versicolor, with a Prevalence Ratio (PR) of 5.200. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between personal hygiene and the occurrence of P. versicolor among scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill.
