Abstract

Introduction: Anemia is a common complication in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients, particularly those undergoing hemodialysis. This complication contributes to increased morbidity, mortality, and decreased quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of anemia in CKD patients undergoing HD at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study using secondary data obtained from the medical records of patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang during September 2024. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. A total sampling technique was used, resulting in 169 respondents. Results: The results show that anemia in CKD patients undergoing HD is higher in female patients (53.3%) compared to male patients (46.7%), with a dominance in the age groups of 45-54 years (29.6%) and 55-64 years (29.6%). A total of 142 patients (84%) had hypertension as the main comorbid condition, followed by diabetes (28.4%). The highest frequency of hemodialysis duration was in the range of >24 months (67.5%), with moderate anemia being the most common degree in both females (29%) and males (27.8%). The most prevalent erythrocyte morphology was normochromic normocytic anemia (78.1%), and the majority had sufficient iron status (79.9%). Conclusion: Anemia in CKD patients undergoing HD is predominantly found in females aged 45-64 years. Most patients have hypertension as a comorbid condition, with a HD duration frequently exceeding 24 months. The severity of anemia is primarily moderate in both males and females. The most common red blood cell morphology is normochromic normocytic anemia, and the majority of patients have adequate iron status.
