Abstract

Background. Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a chronic infection of the middle ear with tympanic membrane perforation and ear discharge lasting more than two months, either continuously or intermittently. Cholesteatoma, a dangerous type of CSOM, is an abnormal growth of squamous epithelium in the middle ear, which can lead to hearing loss and complications if left untreated. This study aims to identify the characteristics of CSOM patients with cholesteatoma undergoing surgery at Dr. Moh. Hoesin General Hospital in the period 2022-2023. Methods. This study used a descriptive observational method with secondary data from medical records of all CSOM patients with cholesteatoma who met the inclusion criteria. The sampling technique was total sampling. Results. The sample size was 158 patients. The majority of patients were aged 21-30 years (28.5%), with a predominance of male patients (54.4%). The most common type of perforation was total (51.3%), and the most frequent type of hearing loss was conductive (58.9%), with severe degree (39.9%). The primary treatment was Canal Wall Down (CWD) surgery (53.8%), and the most common cholesteatoma stage was stage III (86.1%). Intact ossicles were found in 58.9% of patients, and the most frequent complication was intratemporal (81.6%). Conclusion. The majority of patients were young adults with a predominance of male patients. The most common type of perforation was total. Most patients experienced conductive hearing loss, with severe hearing loss being the most common degree. The most frequently performed surgery was Canal Wall Down (CWD), with stage III being the most frequently found cholesteatoma stage, and intact ossicles as the most common finding.
