Abstract

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate gland, which is commonly accompanied by the presence of inflammation known as prostatitis on histologic examination. The pattern of prostatitis can be evaluated based on the location, extent, and degree of inflammation. This study aims to provide an overview of the comprehensive evaluation of prostatitis and the clinical profile of patients with histopathological diagnosis of prostatitis in BPH. A descriptive observational study was conducted on 49 patients with histopathological diagnosis of prostatitis in BPH who had histopathology slides and medical record at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang in 2021-2023. The slides were observed under microscope to evaluate the location, extent, and degree of inflammation. Whereas, medical records were used to collect patient clinical data. Patients were mostly in the 60-69 years age group (63.3%). Evaluation of prostatitis demonstrated that inflammation was mostly stromal (61.2%), distributed multifocally (65.3%), and moderate in degree (65.3%). Most patients were classified as non-obese (87.8%). The most common LUTS complaint was obstruction/voiding symptoms (95.9%). Most patients prostate volume was ≤80 mL (83.7%), and all patients underwent TURP as prostate surgery (100%). Prostatitis in BPH has pathological characteristics such as inflammation that is mostly found in the stromal, multifocal, and moderate degree. Clinical characteristics include a high prevalence in the elderly aged 60-69 years, without obesity, complaining of obstruction/voiding symptoms, and undergoing TURP as the main surgical procedure.
