Abstract
Background: Kinang consists of a mixture such as Piper betle L., Areca catechu L., Uncaria gambir and Calsium hydroxide. Previous studies had suggested that the four components of the kinang contained substances that act as anti-inflammatory agents. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the antiinflammatory activities of kinang ointment in male rats Wistar strain. Method: In vivo experimental research with pretest posttest only control group design was conducted at Animal House of Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University and Palembang Clinic Laboratory Office. Thirty rats were divided into 5 groups, namely Groups 1, 2, and 3 were given 5%, 10%, and 20% kinang ointment, group 4 was given 0.2% Hyaluronic acid gel and group 5 was given placebo ointment. The rats were induced 0.1 ml Carrageenan solution on labial ginggival of lower lip rat and treated with kinang ointment twice daily for four days and 1 ml of blood taken in the orbital sinus. The number of neutrophil cells was calculated using a hematology analyzer and analyzed statistically. Result: The results showed that the positive control group had the highest decrease of neutrophil cells at 12.17g/dl followed by kinang 20% group at 7.83g/dl, 10% kinang at 3.50g/dl, 5% kinang at 1.16g/dl, while the negative control group had an increase the number of neutrophil cells at 4.33g/dl. Conclusion: Kinang ointment of 5% concentration had anti inflammatory acivities in male rats wistar strain. The higher concentration of kinang ointment the higher anti inflammatory properties obtained.
