Abstract
Background: Osteoporosis is a disease in which deterioration of the microarchitecture and bone mineral density happens, thereby increasing the risk of fracture. South Sumatra has the highest prevalence of osteoporosis in Indonesia (27.75%). Ibandronate is the most widely used bisphosphonate class drug in osteoporosis patients at the outpatient polyclinic of dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital in 2021–2023. This study aims to determine the sociodemography, clinical, and bone density characteristics of osteoporosis patients who receive ibandronate therapy at the rheumatology polyclinic of dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. Methods: This study used an observational descriptive method with primary data from patient interviews and secondary data from medical records and BMD data for the January 2021–December 2023 period in patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The majority of osteoporosis patients who received ibandronate therapy were ≥50 years old (93.4%), women (95.1%), had a normal BMI (37.7%), with a history of comorbid diseases in the form of heart disease (42.6%), and had no history of falls (62.3%), smoking (96.7%), hormonal contraceptives (57.4%), nor alcohol consumption (96.7%). The most common complaint was localized pain (67.2%) and most patients did not complain about any side effects from ibandronate (73.8%). The most common bone density in these patients was in the range of ≤-2.5 SD, both in the category of AP spine before (73.8%) and after (59.0%) ibandronate therapy, as well as total femur before (72.1%) and after (77.0%) ibandronate therapy. Conclusion: Osteoporosis patients who received ibandronate therapy at the rheumatology polyclinic of dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital were mostly women, ≥ 50 years old, had a normal BMI, and had no history of injury, smoking, hormonal contraceptives, or alcohol consumption. Most patients experience localized pain as the main complaint and did not complain about any side effects. The bone density value in AP spine and total femur is mostly in the osteoporosis category (≤-2.5 SD), both before and after ibandronate therapy.
