Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant tumor that develops from squamous cells of the epithelium of the skin, conjunctiva, and cornea. Risk factors for SCC include environmental and geographical factors. The prognosis for SCC is good if detected early and treated adequately before it metastasizes. The gold standard of SCC is histologic examination. This study aims to determine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and degree of tumor differentiation of SCC patients at the Ophtalmology Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang for the period 2020-2024. This study used a descriptive research with a total sampling technique using secondary data obtained from the Medical Records Installation for the period 2020-2024 which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were processed using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 27 application. The results show that the prevalence of SCC at Ophtalmology Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang for the period 2020-2024 was 16.67% with the highest incidence in 2024 (25%). Based on the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients, the majority were ≥ 50 years old (60%), the sex ratio between men and women was 1:1, most occupations were outdoors (45%), and most had basic education (60%). The lesions were mostly multiple (45%), with the most size >3cm (55%) and lateralization on the right side (60%). The most common degree of SCC differentiation were well-differentiated and poorly differentiated (50%).
