Abstract

Background: The tear film is a thin layer covering the surface of the eye, essential for ocular health and visual function. Tear film disturbances are common after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), leading to dry eye symptoms. Diquafosol sodium 3% is an eye drop that enhances tear and mucin secretion, accelerating tear film recovery. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of diquafosol sodium 3% eye drops in accelerating mucin repair of the tear film in post-PPV patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This was a randomized controlled clinical trial with a single-blind design, conducted from May 2023 to December 2023. Post-PPV patients meeting the inclusion criteria were divided into two groups: the diquafosol sodium 3% treatment group and the control group. Effectiveness was assessed using the Ferning test at weeks 2, 4, and 8 postoperatively. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 with the McNemar test (p <0.05). Results: Patients receiving diquafosol sodium 3% showed significant improvement in tear film recovery compared to the control group. By week 8, Ferning test scores in the diquafosol sodium 3% group nearly returned to normal, indicating the drug's effectiveness in accelerating mucin repair of the tear film. Conclusion: Diquafosol sodium 3% effectively accelerates mucin repair of the tear film in post-PPV patients, making it a potential adjuvant therapy to reduce the risk of dry eye complications and improve clinical outcomes.
