Abstract
Purple Paper Flower (Bougainvillea spectabilis) has traditionally been used to treat various diseases such as hepatitis, ulcers, vaginal discharge, and irregular menstruation. Its secondary metabolite compounds include alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, quinones, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids, which have potential to accelerate wound healing. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the extract and the effect of ethanol extract from Purple Paper Flower on the healing rate of burn and incision wounds. Test animals with wounds were divided into six groups: the positive control group treated with 1% Silversulfadiazine cream, the negative control group without any treatment, and test groups treated with ointments at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Burn wounds were created using a heated metal plate applied to the rats' backs for 10 seconds, while incision wounds were made with a scalpel to a length of 3 cm. Observed parameters included burn wound area, incision length, percentage of healing, and histopathology. The results showed that a 5% ethanol extract concentration of Purple Paper Flower was the most effective for healing both burn and incision wounds, achieving 100% healing within 12 days for burns and five days for incisions. Statistical analysis revealed that the treatment groups exhibited significantly different wound healing activity (p<0.05) compared to the negative control and showed no significant difference (p>0.05) compared to the positive control. The data indicate that a 5% ethanol extract concentration of Purple Paper Flower has the potential to accelerate the healing of burn and incision wounds.
