Abstract
The red onion (Allium cepa L.) have a skin that contained active compounds such as flavonoids, steroids, and phenolics that have the potential as antioxidants, one of which can be used as a hair growth stimulant. This study aimed to optimize the use of gelling agents in hair serum formulations of red onion peel extract (Allium cepa L.) as a hair growth stimulant. The formula optimization was developed using the Regular Two-Level Factorial Design method on Design Expert® 13 software. The study used 2 factors, carbomer 940 with a concentration of 0.1-0.3% and sodium alginate with a concentration of 0.5-1%. The evaluation of the physical properties of hair serum based on factorial design showed that the optimum formula was found in formula 2 with a concentration of carbomer 940 0.3% and sodium alginate 1%. The average charateristics of pH, viscosity, spreadability with 50 gram, spreadability with 100 gram, spreadability with 150 gram, adhesiveness with 50 gram, and adhesiveness with 100 gram were respectively 6.14±0.01; 854.35±12.87 cP; 7.26±0.70 cm; 8.02±0.19 cm; 8.69±0.27 cm; 4.17±0.23 s; and 3.35±0.26 s. The results of the stability test by cycling test showed no changes in organoleptic properties, no phase separation (syneresis) and no significant differences in pH and viscosity. The optimal formulation of the red onion peel extract hair serum had an IC50 value of 84.00 ppm which indicates strong antioxidant activity so that it has the potential to be developed as a hair growth.
