Abstract
River pollution due to microplastics has become a very crucial environmental problem today. Microplastic pollution in rivers can be an indicator of pollutants in waters that affect river water quality. This study aims to detect microplastic contamination in the waters of the Musi River. This research is a quantitative study with an analytical descriptive research design. The methods used in this study include water sampling and laboratory analysis. Water sampling points were determined by purposive sampling of 200 ml. The sampling technique was carried out using the Niskin Water Sampler tool with 3 repetitions. Water quality measurements were carried out using a pH meter, DO meter, and OHAUS starter 3100M. Water samples were processed at the Environmental Health Laboratory of the Faculty of Public Health. Analysis of microplastic characteristics was carried out using a Trinocular Microscope in the Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Teacher Training & Education, Sriwijaya University. The results showed that the microplastics found were in the form of fibers, films, fragments, and pellets with sizes ranging from 291.16 µm to 1604.55 µm and brown, red, and green in color. The abundance of microplastics obtained was 120 particles/L. The results of water quality measurements show that the TDS parameter values obtained tend to be high. The conclusion of this study shows that there is microplastic contamination in the Musi River, which indicates a high level of microplastic pollution. This is evidenced by the number of microplastics obtained as many as 12 particles. To reduce the high level of microplastic pollution, it is recommended that the community reduce the use of nets, fishing ropes or plastic materials and not throw damaged nets and fishing ropes directly into the river.
