Abstract

Laboratory workers are a group that is vulnerable to exposure to air pollution in the form of gas and dust in the room so that it has an impact on health. One of them is laboratory workers at Sriwijaya University who spend almost 90% of their time in the laboratory room during work shifts. The purpose of the study is to analyze the risks of the health of officers and the factors that have the most influence on lung capacity. The type of research is analytical research with cross-sectional method using Environmental Health Risk Analysis (EHR) approach. The research sample consisted of 51 laboratory officers measuring exposure in 30 laboratory rooms at Sriwijaya University. The results of the risk level (RQ) calculation showed the RQ value <1 for TSP exposure and PM2.5 dust is categorized as safe while the RQ value ≥1 for CO and CO2 exposure is categorized as unsafe. The univariate results showed that officers who experienced lung disorders were 82.4%. Bivariate results showed there was a correlation between the use of PPE (p=0.060) and exercise habits (p=0.002) with the vital lung capacity of Sriwijaya University laboratory officers. The results of the calculation of the risk level (RQ) obtained the RQ value <1 for TSP exposure and PM2.5 dust is categorized as safe while the RQ value ≥1 for CO and CO2 exposure is categorized as unsafe. The univariate results showed that officers who experienced lung disorders were 82.4%. Bivariate results showed there was a correlation between the use of PPE (p=0.060) and exercise habits (p=0.002) with the vital lung capacity of Sriwijaya University laboratory staff. The dominant factor affecting lung vital capacity is exercise habits with OR =14,930 (CI 1,587 – 140,433). In this study, risk management and risk management strategies are needed to reduce the concentration of air pollution exposure in the laboratory.
