Abstract
Pepaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the plants that grow in the tropics. Pepaya is a fruit originating from Southeast Asia (including Indonesia). Pesticides function as substances to control pests and have benefits to help control various disease vectors. However, pesticides have side effects that are bad for the environment and health, one of which is damage to the human organ system to cause death. This study aims to evaluate the pesticide use compliance score and the category of knowledge of pepaya farmers in implementing pesticides and to determine the type of disease pathogen, incidence and intensity of pest and disease attacks and beneficial insect populations in papaya cultivations This study was conducted in several pepaya plantations in Empat Lawang Regency, South Sumatra and started from July until October 2024. Data collection was carried out by survey using purposive sampling method by interviewing pepaya farmers regarding the use of pesticides. The method used in this study, namely using a direct survey method on several Pepaya cultivations The results of observations obtained are the average age of farmers 30-40 years and 41-60 years and the highest level of farmer education was high school graduates. The level of compliance of papaya farmers in applying pesticides with an average score of 409 which is classified as high knowledge. Based on the results found pests from 6 orders and consists of a total of 1250 pests. The value of the pest diversity index 1<1.11≤ 3 which means the diversity is moderate. The highest intensity of attack is from Pseudococcus comski with an intensity of 9.5% and is classified as mild. The most common disease that infected papaya plants is Papaya Mosaic Virus. The conclusion of this study is that 409% of papaya plant farmers in Empat Lawang Regency have a high level of pesticide implementation compliance. The existing correlation between compliance with the implementation of pesticide use against pests and diseases is very weak. The higher the score of pesticide use, the lower the attack intensity and percentage of pests and diseases.
