Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The area in the fovea that does not have a blood supply from the retinal blood vessels is called the Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ). The FAZ enlarges in diabetic retinopathy, and appears to become larger as the stage of retinopathy progresses and is considered an indication of macular ischemia which is also known to be associated with poor visual outcomes. This study aims to determine the correlation between the size of the FAZ (Foveal Avascular Zone) diameter and visual acuity in diabetic retinopathy patients using OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography) Method: A correlation test study to analyze the correlation between the size of the FAZ (Foveal Avascular Zone) diameter and visual acuity in diabetic retinopathy patients was undertaken at the Department and Eye Polyclinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Data was taken since April 2024 and 32 samples of diabetic retinopathy patients who were treated at the Eye Polyclinic and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study were obtained. The correlation between the size of the FAZ (Foveal Avascular Zone) diameter and visual acuity (LogMAR) was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation test. All data were analyzed with SPPS version 25.0. Results: In this study, the range of visual acuity measured by LogMAR Chart in diabetic retinopathy patients in this study was 0.1 to 1.6 with an average of 0.716 + 0.35. The size of the vertical superficial FAZ diameter was 606.9 (range 292 to 970 mm); the size of the horizontal superficial FAZ diameter was 647.22 (range 250 to 1,093); the size of the vertical deep FAZ diameter was 703.41 (range 444 to 975 mm); and the size of the horizontal deep FAZ diameter was 715.50 (range 456 to 988 mm). There is a very strong correlation between the size of the vertical superficial FAZ diameter (r = 0.905; p = 0.000) and horizontal (r = 0.860; p = 0.000) and a strong positive correlation between the size of the vertical deep FAZ diameter (r = 0.743; p = 0.000) and horizontal (r = 0.715; p = 0.000) with visual acuity in diabetic retinopathy patients. Conclusion: Age and vertical superficial FAZ diameter are associated with visual acuity in diabetic retinopathy patients.
