Abstract
Rice is the staple food as a source of carbohydrates for most of Indonesian society. During storage, one of the dominant factors that cause damage is due to the attack of warehouse pest Sitophilus oryzae. The development period of S. oryzae on rice is influenced by the chemical components and physical characteristics of the seeds. The purpose of this research was to investigate the development of biological pest S. oryzae on stored Ciherang rice and IR 42. The method used in this research was the experimental method with two treatments and five replications during egg development, and three replicates on the development of larvae, pupae and young beetle in rice. Data analysis for development of S. oryzae in Ciherang and IR 42 tested with t test. Number of eggs that succeed to be larvae, the number of larvae that succeed became pupae and the number of pupae that succeed became a young beetle was examined by contingency table χ². This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Entomology, Plant Pests and Diseases Dept. Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya Indralaya from December 2015 until February 2016. The results showed developmental period of eggs, larvae and pupae S. oryzae on rice varieties Ciherang and IR 42 were 3.33-5.33 days, 17.33-18.67 days and 6.67-8.33 days. Life cycle of S. oryzae was 31.67 days on Ciherang variety and 36.67 days on IR 42 variety.
