Abstract

Cucurbitaceous plants, which belong to the pumpkin tribe, are an important component of the agricultural sector especially in South Sumatra and Indonesia in general. These plants are widely consumed by the community and have significant economic value. Several types of plants in this family, such as cucumber, melon, watermelon, sponge gourd, and bitter melon, have an important role in the horticultural economy. Cucurbitaceae plants can grow in various environmental conditions, both in the high and lowlands, with moderate to intensive rainfall requirements. However, the cultivation of these crops faces various obstacles, especially pest and disease attacks. Pests such as fruit flies, aphids, stem borers and cucumber beetles as well as diseases such as downy mildew, anthracnose, fusarium wilt, powdery mildew and leaf spot often cause stunt plant growth and reduce yields. Good plant maintenance including regular watering and land sanitation are also important to reduce the risk of pest and disease attacks. These pest and disease constraints greatly affect crop growth and can lead to economic losses for farmers. This study aims to evaluate whether cucurbitaceous farmers have conducted proper pest and disease control and whether they use pesticides correctly in these control practices. This study shows that age, education, land size, crop type, and insect diversity are important factors affecting the success of cucurbitaceous crop cultivation in South Sumatra.
