Abstract

Bangle (Zingiber purpureum Roscoe.) is a herbaceous plant that grows in lowlands to highlands and is used in traditional Indonesian medicine, especially its rhizome. This plant has properties to treat fever, stomach ache, and gout, and contains saponins, flavonoids, essential oils, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids, and antioxidants. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as gibberellin and IAA can affect the hormonal balance that plays a role in plant growth. This study aims to determine the effect of giving PGRs gibberellin and IAA on the growth of bangle rhizomes. This research was conducted from February to October 2024. It took place at the Experimental House of the Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, South Sumatra. The results of the study showed that the GA3 100 ppm treatment showed an average shoot length of 21.12 cm, the number of shoots 2.20 and the percentage of rhizomes that sprouted 100%. Meanwhile, the GA3 100 ppm and IAA 50 ppm treatment showed an average number of leaves of 7.20. The conclusion of this study is that the length of the bangle rhizome shoots is influenced by the GA3 treatment and variations in IAA concentration, but the number of shoots, shoots, leaves, roots, and shoot height have no significant effect on the gibberellin treatment and variations in IAA concentration.
