Abstract

This study examines the "Parenting Patterns of Parents to Down Syndrome Children who go to Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri Banyuasin". The purpose of this study is to describe the form of parenting that is applied and what obstacles parents face to Down syndrome children who go to Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri Banyuasin. The method used in this research is qualitative, with a case study approach to the research strategy. Data was collected through interviews with five primary informants and strengthened by other supporting informants. Documentation and literature studies were then analyzed using the parenting theory that Diana Baumrind had proposed. Parenting is a process of total interaction between parents and children, which includes activities to nurture, feed, protect, and direct children's behavior during development and influence development and the development of the child's personality. Based on this theory, the author analyzes that the interaction of parents with children with Down syndrome dramatically affects children's emotions. The results showed that the five informants applied three types of parenting patterns to the situation at hand, namely by applying authoritarian, democratic, and permissive parenting. The obstacles faced by parents who have children with down syndrome are the lack of understanding of down syndrome children, the difficulty in understanding the behavior and character possessed by down syndrome children, down syndrome children's health challenges, lack of social support and planning for their future.
