Abstract
Indonesia is one of the Soil Transmitted Helminths (STHs) endemic country. The worms infect children most between the ages of 5 and 15 years through ingestion of infective eggs or larvae that contaminate food, dirty nails, or by penetration of the skin. This not only has the potential to affect the growth and development of children but also has irreversible consequences that carry into adulthood. This study aimed to determine the association of nail and vended food hygiene with STHs infection in students of SDN 169 Kelurahan Gandus Kecamatan Gandus Palembang. The design of this study was analytic cross sectional. Population of this study was 334 students of SDN 169 Kelurahan Gandus Kecamatan Gandus Palembang. The participants were taken with the proportional stratified random sampling method. Data was collected by interviews and observations with questionnaire and fecal examination using the Kato Katz method and Harada Mori modification. The results were analyzed using Fisher Exact statistical test. Out of the 84 study participants, 3 students (3,6%) were infected with T.trichiura and 2 students (2,4%) were infected mixed between A.lumbricoides and T.trichiura. The Fisher Exact test showed that nail hygiene (p=0,046; PR=7,6; CI 95%: 0,918-81,322) was significantly associated with STHs infection and vended food hygiene (p=0,396; PR=2,9; CI 95%: 0,323-28,278) was not significantly associated wth STHs infection. Nail hygiene is a variable that influences the incidence of STHs infection.
