Abstract

This study aims to detect and analyze microplastic contamination in the waters of the Musi River within Banyuasin Regency, focusing on aquatic biota such as fish and assessing water quality based on physical and chemical parameters. The Musi River, as the primary source of clean water for the people of South Sumatra, has experienced increased pollution due to high human activity, including the disposal of domestic and plastic waste. Research samples included fish and river water collected from multiple locations within the study area. The analysis revealed three main types of microplastics: fibers, foam, and fragments, with fibers being the most prevalent. These microplastics predominantly displayed brown and green colors, with sizes ranging from 306.46 µm to 1068.92 µm. The study also identified microplastic accumulation in fish biota, posing potential health risks through the food chain. Microplastics entering the human body via inhalation, ingestion, or dermal absorption can lead to various health issues, including inflammation, oxidative stress, reproductive disorders, and even cancer risks. These findings emphasize the urgent need for improved plastic waste management and public education to minimize microplastic contamination. Furthermore, this research can serve as a reference for controlling microplastics in aquatic ecosystems and mitigating their impacts on human and environmental health.
