Abstract

Garba Formation is located at the boundary of the South Sumatra Basin of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age. This research was conducted in Bumi Genap area, South Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, South Sumatra Province. In the research area found basalt rocks that have various igneous structures and in petrographic analysis also found a variety of special textures. These geological conditions make this research area interesting to conduct further research, especially to explain how the formation of basalt rocks in the research area. In this study, 11 observation locations were analyzed both petrologically and petrographically. Based on petrological analysis, various kinds of igneous structures such as massive, vesicular, sheeting joint, columnar joint, flow structure, and pillow lava were obtained. While in the petrographic analysis of basalt rocks of the Garba Formation, several special textures were found such as intergranular, porphyritic, glomerophyric, hyalopilitic, pilotassitic, zoning, and sieve. The petrogenesis process begins when magma finally reaches the surface as lava and flows towards lower elevations where the lava flow undergoes cooling to form sheeting joint structures and flow structures. Lava that has not undergone cooling continues to flow towards lower elevations where the lava still contains trapped gas bubbles and later returns to cooling and forms vesicular and massive structures. During the cooling of the lava, there was concordant intrusion in the form of a sill which also experienced cooling to form sheeting joint and massive structures. As the cooling progresses, discordant intrusion in the form of dike occurs which forms a columnar joint structure. Magma continues to try to escape to the surface through the fracture gap so that it experiences direct contact with seawater suddenly and produces a pillow lava structure.
