Abstract

Tuan Kentang's home-based Batik Jumputan industry is well-known as a center for Batik Jumputan production in Palembang, operating on a household scale. It has been found that most small-scale batik industries have not implemented wastewater management due to a lack of knowledge, awareness, and weak regulations, which can cause environmental pollution to impact public health. This study aims to analyze the wastewater management practices of the home-based Batik Jumputan industry in the Kampung Kain Industrial Center, Tuan Kentang Village, Palembang. The research employs a qualitative design with purposive sampling to select 11 informants. Data collection techniques include in-depth interview guidelines and observational checklists. Data validity in this study is ensured through method triangulation, source triangulation, and data triangulation. The results indicate that the home-based Batik Jumputan industry has not managed the wastewater produced. The sources of wastewater arise from the dyeing and washing processes, with a substantial volume generated each production day. The absence of control tanks and drainage systems causes the wastewater to mix with rainwater. Additionally, the Batik Jumputan wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) in the area is no longer functional due to damage. Home-based industries only conduct physical treatment due to limited knowledge about wastewater management and the operation of IPAL. Wastewater is discharged directly into the surrounding environment without routine monitoring of its quality. Local government efforts to support Batik Jumputan artisans are also still suboptimal. In conclusion, most home-based industries have not implemented adequate wastewater management practices, including minimization efforts, collection, treatment, and disposal processes that do not meet wastewater management standards.
