Abstract

BPS data shows that in 2021, Palembang recorded the highest cases of Low Birth Weight in South Sumatra. One of the factors that cause BBLR is exposure to air pollution, including SO₂, which can trigger inflammation in the lungs and placenta. Disruption of the placenta can inhibit the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, increasing the risk of BBLR. This study uses an ecological study design to analyze the alleged relationship between SO₂ pollution and BBLR cases in Palembang using spatial and time series approaches. BBLR data was obtained from the Palembang City Health Office (2020–2023), SO₂ concentration data from DLH Palembang City, and map shapefiles from the Bappeda Palembang City . The study was conducted in seven sub-districts where air sampling locations were mapped using Quantum GIS and overlay analysis to correlate SO₂ concentrations with BBLR cases. The results of the study show that BBLR cases in Plaju district tend to increase every year in 2020-2023. The highest SO₂ concentration in 2019-2022 was found in Kertapati District with 59 μg/NM3/hour and Plaju District with 57 μg/NM3/hour. It was concluded that after overlaying SO₂ concentration cases and BBLR, it was found that there was a possible association between SO₂ pollutant concentrations and BBLR cases in Plaju District in 2021-2022 and Ilir Timur III District in 2022, however, overall, no significant relationship was found between SO₂ concentrations and BBLR cases. Pregnant women are advised to have regular health check-ups to prevent or handle the effects of SO₂ exposure on the risk of BBLR from an early age.
