Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between news media literacy, news media system knowledge, need for cognition, and media locus of control with political trust in first-time voters. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a relationship between news media literacy, news media system knowledge, need for cognition, and media locus of control in first-time voters. The population in this study is first-time voters, where the research sample is 235 first-time voters and 50 first-time voters for try out. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The research measuring tool uses a political trust scale that refers to the political trust dimention from Loeber (2011) and a news media literacy scale that refers to the news media literacy dimention from Maksl, et al. (2015). Correlation testing uses is Pearson’s product-moment techniques. The results of the first pearson product-moment test showed a correlation coefficient value of r = -0,132 (p=0,043; p<0,05), which means that there is a relationship between political trust and news media literacy. The second pearson product-moment test showed a correlation coefficient value of r = 0,128 (p=0,037; p<0,05), which means that there is a relationship between political trust and news media system knowledge. The third pearson product-moment test showed a correlation coefficient value of r = -0,068 (p=0,303; p<0,05), which means that there is no relationship between political trust and need for cognition. The fourth pearson product-moment test showed a correlation coefficient value of r = -0,099 (p=0,132; p<0,05), which means that there is no relationship between political trust and media locus of control.
