Abstract

Matoa is a native Indonesian plant that undergoes natural cross-pollination, resulting in various variants based on the texture of the fruit flesh and the color of the fruit skin. In Sumatra, Matoa is called by various names such as kungkil, kongkir, kasai, ganggo, launteneng and pakam. The methods used in this study include exploration and observation of morphological characteristics in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds, with a descriptive approach. The results showed that there were two matoa variants, namely coconut matoa and papeda matoa, which had significant differences in morphological characteristics. The kinship relationship between kungkil and matoa plants was analyzed using the Unweight Pair-Group Method Arithmetic (UPGMA) method, which produced two main clusters based on the similarity of morphological characters. This study is expected to provide useful information regarding genetic diversity and the potential for developing matoa plants as well as biodiversity conservation in South Sumatra.
