Abstract

Indonesia is among the most seismically active countries, necessitating advanced construction technologies to mitigate earthquake-induced damage and risks. One potential approach is the development of lightweight concrete, particularly foamed concrete. This research focuses on enhancing foamed concrete by partially substituting conventional fine aggregates with artificial aggregates composed of fly ash a byproduct of coal combustion—and epoxy resin, both of which exhibit lower density. The mix proportions were determined based on the American Concrete Institute (ACI) standard, Guide for Cellular Concretes Above 50 lb/ft³ (800 kg/m³), resulting in five different mix designs, including a control mix (normal foamed concrete, NFC) and four variations incorporating artificial aggregates (AAFC). Cylindrical specimens measuring 10×20 cm were prepared to assess the influence of variations in the water-cement ratio (W/C), superplasticizer dosage, and material composition on slump flow, density, and compressive strength. The findings indicated that the highest slump flow value of 58.00 cm was obtained in the mix with a W/C ratio of 0.45 and a 1% superplasticizer dosage. Most AAFC mixes satisfied the lightweight concrete density requirement according to ASTM 330/330M (below 1850 kg/m³). The maximum recorded compressive strength was 16.71 MPa at a W/C ratio of 0.45 with 1% superplasticizer, though this remains below the structural target. This study highlights the feasibility of incorporating artificial aggregates derived from fly ash and epoxy resin into foamed concrete, emphasizing the need for further optimization to enhance its structural performance.
