Abstract
The increasing urban population will lead to greater utilization of natural resources and the environment. The rising number of motor vehicles and various industries using fossil fuels contributes to an increase in CO2 gas concentration in the air. The rise in CO2 concentration can be mitigated through measures to reduce CO2 levels. The rain tree (Samanea saman) is one of the greening plants commonly planted along roads, such as on Demang Lebar Daun Street, Palembang, as a shade plant and absorber of gas emissions caused by traffic congestion. PM10 particles can associate with other pollutant substances. Stomata play a primary role as the site of gas exchange, such as CO2 needed by plants for photosynthesis, and also act as one of the entry pathways for pollutants, particularly air pollutants. This study aims to evaluate air quality based on PM10 levels, analyze stomatal morphology in terms of number and density on leaves, and calculate carbon stock based on the diameter of rain trees (Samanea saman). The research was conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 at Demang Lebar Daun Street, Palembang. The determination of research segments was carried out by direct observation of locations with a significant presence of rain trees at a specific point. PM10 measurement and carbon stock calculations were conducted in four predetermined segments, while stomatal morphology observations were carried out at five locations: four in the segments and one as a control site at Indralaya Campus. Samples were taken with five replications at each location. Carbon stock measurements involved three trees in each segment. Stomatal observations were conducted at the Laboratory of Physiology and Development, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University. The results showed PM10 levels ranging from 3.28 mg/m³ to 4.73 mg/m³, stomatal numbers ranging from 113.6 cells to 149.6 cells, stomatal density ranging from 578.854 cells/mm² to 762.292 cells/mm², and carbon stock ranging from 0.413 kg/tree to 1.752 kg/tree.
