Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health problems that often occur are caries and periodontal disease which the main cause is plaque. Toothbrushing is the most effective method to prevent plaque accumulation. Commercial Toothbrushes have a lot of variety, one of it is a toothbrush with silver nanoparticles that have an antimicrobial effect. Aim of this study was to determine the effect of using silver nanoparticle toothbrush on plaque index. Method: This research was a quasi -experiment using pre and posttest with control group design which was done to 36 respondents who were divided into two groups equally based on the toothbrush bristle types, group 1 (toothbrush without silver nanoparticle) and group 2 (toothbrush with silver nanoparticle). The plaque index that used in this study was Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman modification of Quigley-Hein Plaque Index. Statistical analysis was done using Independent t-Test. Result: Plaque index mean value after brushing were 3.81 ± 0.39 (group 1) and 3.22 ± 2.46 (group 2). Statistical analysis showed significant difference between group 1 and group 2. Conclusion: Brushing teeth using silver nanoparticle toothbrush can reduce plaque index.
