Abstract

Background. Indonesia is rich in ethnic diversity, each of which has its own characteristics, among them are Bataknese and Minangkabaunese. One of characteristic that can be seen is from an intercanthal distance and the mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth Aim. Find out if there are difference in the ratio of intercanthal distance and mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth between the Batak and Minangkabau tribes. Materials and methods. This study was an observational analytic design with nonexperimental correlation. The research subjects were 60 people with inclusion criteria were >17 years old. The intercanthal distance was measured from the median angle of the right to left eye in the study subjects. Measurements of mesiodistal width of the six maxillary anterior teeth done on the study model, measured from the widest mesial to distal boundary on each tooth. Both measurements are performed using a digital calipers with three repetitions. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and independent t-test. Results. The results showed a significant (p>0.05) and a strong relationship between intercanthal distance and mesiodistal width of six maxillary anterior teeth in both tribes. Independent t-test showed a significant difference between the two ethnic groups (p<0.05) with the average value ratio in Bataknesen 1: 1.42 and the Minangkabaunese of 1: 1.45. Conclusion. There is a significant difference in the ratio of intercanthal distance and the mesiodistal width of the six maxillary anterior teeth between the Bataknese and the Minangnese.
