Abstract

As art, especially design, continues to develop, it is evident in the increasing number of applicants for design majors at vocational schools in South Sumatra and universities in the modern era. This phenomenon indicates the growing need for more expansive art facilities, particularly on the island of Sumatra. Art education, which is practical and active, requires attention to comfort during the learning process. Art students tend to prefer flexible, interactive, and non-monotonous learning methods, and they enjoy discussions and seeking inspiration from their surroundings. Therefore, spaces are needed that can support interaction and also serve as open areas for learning activities and exhibitions of their work. In addition, the hot climate in Palembang must be considered to ensure comfort during learning, whether indoors or outdoors. Based on this, a Design College in Palembang has been designed, adopting the Passive Energy concept, which is a building designed to adapt to the local climate and weather, reduce electricity consumption, and optimize cooling through natural ventilation and temperature control via green open spaces (GOS) in every educational mass. The addition of a pond is also planned to maintain air humidity. The building design maximizes the use of natural light, ventilation openings, and the selection of materials that do not absorb excessive heat. The available GOS can be used by students for learning activities and informal exhibitions. The building layout is also designed to be interconnected, making access easier and enhancing the effectiveness of interaction between students and other users.
