Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that can lead to kidney fibrosis. Current therapies rely on renal replacement therapy, which significantly impacts the quality of life, highlighting the need for more effective treatment strategies. One potential alternative is the use of natural compounds, such as Cinnamomum burmannii, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the bioactive fraction of Cinnamomum burmannii DLBS 2411 on changes in Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) levels in a rat model of kidney fibrosis. Methods: This laboratory experimental study utilized a pre-post test with control group design. A total of 30 Sprague-Dawley rats underwent Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction (UUO) and were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control, and treatment groups receiving the bioactive fraction of Cinnamomum burmannii DLBS 2411 at doses of 50 mg/kg BW, 100 mg/kg BW, and 200 mg/kg BW. TNF-α levels were measured before UUO, prior to intervention, and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The study showed a reduction in mean TNF-α levels following the administration of the bioactive fraction of Cinnamomum burmannii DLBS 2411 across all treatment groups, although the decrease was not statistically significant. The most substantial reduction in TNF-α levels was observed at the 100 mg/kg BW dose. Conclusion: The administration of the bioactive fraction of Cinnamomum burmannii DLBS 2411 was as effective as methylprednisolone in reducing TNF-α levels, suggesting its potential as an alternative or substitute therapy for methylprednisolone. Keywords: Cinnamomum burmannii, kidney fibrosis, Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction, TNF-α.
