Abstract

The maternal and infant mortality rates remain a serious issue in Indonesia. One of the main causes of neonatal death is Low Birth Weight (LBW), which is often associated with pregnancy complications such as anemia and preeclampsia. Both conditions can affect fetal growth and increase the risk of babies being born with a weight of less than 2,500 grams. This study aims to investigate the relationship between anemia during pregnancy and preeclampsia with the incidence of LBW at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in Bandung. This research is a non-experimental quantitative study with a retrospective approach. Data were obtained from the medical records of mothers who gave birth between January and December 2024. A total of 179 cases were sampled, consisting of 83 mothers diagnosed with anemia and 96 mothers with preeclampsia. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test to determine the relationship between variables. The research results show a significant relationship between anemia during pregnancy and the incidence of low birth weight (p = 0.005). This indicates that anemia can affect fetal growth in the womb and increase the risk of low birth weight. Conversely, the analysis of the preeclampsia variable showed no significant relationship with the incidence of low birth weight (p = 0.149). This may be influenced by variations in the severity and management of preeclampsia among patients. Therefore, it is important to conduct early detection and intervention for anemia and preeclampsia during pregnancy as a preventive measure against low birth weight and to improve the health of mothers and babies.
