Abstract

Mental disorders are a growing public health concern, with 16,029 cases of people with mental disorders (ODGJ) reported in South Sumatra in 2023. The rate of non-adherence to medication reaches 48.6%, contributing to relapse and reduced quality of life among patients. One of the key factors influencing adherence is family support, as a lack of support can lead to poor supervision, motivation, and understanding of the importance of treatment. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family support and medication adherence among ODGJ patients in the working area of Puskesmas Lembak. A cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach was used, involving 70 family members of ODGJ patients selected through total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed with chi-square tests and logistic regression. Results showed that 55.7% of patients adhered to their medication regimen. Family support had a significant relationship with adherence (p=0.001), as did the age of the family members (p=0.018), their education level (p=0.016), and support from healthcare workers (p=0.047). Income and distance to healthcare facilities showed no significant effect. Multivariate analysis identified family support as the dominant factor (p=0.008; PR=10.334). In conclusion, patient adherence is influenced by limited family support, younger age, lower education, and insufficient healthcare support. Families are encouraged to actively accompany patients by providing better informational and instrumental support, while healthcare workers should strengthen their promotive and preventive roles to improve treatment outcomes.
