Abstract

The research about synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HAp) from fish bone cork (Channa striata) and the effect of alumina (Al2O3) addition on HAp mechanical properties has been done. This research aimed to acknowledge calcium consentration of fish bone cork , obtain optimum temperature and duration of calcination on HAp synthesis, morphology of HAp, elements which contained on HAp, and obtain composite HAp-alumina-gelatin compositions that comply as dental and bone implant materials. The synthesis of HAp was carried out with Ca(OH)2 and H3PO4 precursor and then it calcined with temperatures variation 700, 800, 900, and 1000°C and calcination duration 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. The HAp powder that calcined with optimum temperature and calcination duration composited with alumina and gelatin. The characterization of HAp crystalline investigated by using XRD, morphologies and elements of HAp investigated by using SEM-EDS, and mechanical properties of HAp and composite HAp-alumina-gelatin which cover hardness investigated by using Vickers hardness and compressive strength using autograph. The result shown that calcium concentration in the fish bone cork is 17,83%. HAp with the highest crystallinity formed at 900°C during 1 hour. SEM results describe that morphology from HAp form irregular crystal and large pore. EDS results describe that Ca/P ratio in the amount of 0.52. The result of characterization of mechanical properties showed that composite HAp-alumina-gelatin with 70 : 30 : 10, 60 : 30 : 10, 60 : 40 : 10, and 50 : 40 : 10 compositions accupied as dental and cancellous bone implant materials meanwhile 80 : 10 : 10 compositions accupied as cortical bone implant materials.
