Abstract

storage phase. Although it is not a life-threatening condition, urinary incontinence significantly affects women’s quality of life, impacting physical, psychological, and social well-being. Due to cultural stigma and embarrassment, it is often underreported, resulting in limited epidemiological data. In Indonesia, prevalence rates vary across regions, with studies reporting 14.3% among women at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan and 34.3% of stress urinary incontinence in pregnant women at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Several risk factors have been associated with urinary incontinence, including age, pregnancy, parity, mode of delivery, pelvic floor trauma, menopause, and comorbid conditions. Given its multifactorial and complex pathophysiology, further investigation is essential. This study aims to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence among women in Palembang, assess the distribution of incontinence types, and identify associated risk factors. Method: This study aims to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women, including the distribution of urinary incontinence types and the risk factors associated with its occurrence. Result: The results of the study showed that the prevalence of urinary incontinence was 31.5 with urge incontinence being the most common type (16 cases or 8%) followed by mixed incontinence (11 cases or 5.5%). The majority of participants had an onset of symptoms ≥6 months, with a mean age of 57.9 ±9.9 years, a mean BMI of 22.2 (range 16.6–33.8), and half of the participants (50%) had a parity of more than three. Additionally, a large proportion of the participants were postmenopausal (156 or 76%). The most common comorbidities were diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Urinary incontinence was found to be significantly associated with age, menopausal status, parity, and comorbidities (p<0.05). Conclusion: Urinary incontinence is a common condition in women, particularly urge and mixed types. It is significantly associated with increasing age, menopause, higher parity, and the presence of comorbidities such as autoimmunes, diabetes and hypertension. These findings underscore the importance of routine screening and early intervention, especially in high-risk populations. Keyword: Prevalence, urinary incontinence, stress type, urge type
