Abstract
This study focuses on the development of an adsorbent derived from oil sludge activated with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) using a hydrothermal method as a solution for reducing hazardous and toxic waste (B3). The high carbon, iron, and aluminium content in the sludge was utilized to synthesize Al-Fe/C oxide adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue and eriochrome black T dyes. The research aimed to analyze the morphology and metal components of the oil sludge powder using SEM-EDX and to determine the number of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites using FTIR. The optimal adsorption conditions of the Al-Fe/C oxide adsorbent were evaluated through variations in pH, contact time, and dye concentration. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics were also analyzed to assess the adsorbent’s performance. The sludge powder contained 51.7% carbon, 10.8% iron, and 1.6% aluminium, with an irregular surface structure. Acidity measurements showed surface acidity of 0.646 mmol/g, internal acidity of 4.9878 mmol/g, and total acidity of 5.6338 mmol/g. The optimal conditions for methylene blue adsorption occurred at pH 7, with a contact time of 120 minutes and a concentration of 90 mg/L, while for eriochrome black T, optimum adsorption was achieved at pH 3, 180 minutes, and 70 mg/L. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with rate constants of 0.0712 g/mg.min for methylene blue and 0.0028 g/mg·min for eriochrome black T. The adsorption of methylene blue followed the Freundlich isotherm (R² = 0.9491), indicating multilayer adsorption, while eriochrome black T followed the Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.9325), indicating monolayer adsorption.
