Abstract

Pampangan buffalo is a typical swamp buffalo livestock in South Sumatra, especially in Pampangan District, which is one of therich germplasm in the province. The traditional rearing system is also a big obstacle, where farmers pay less attention to the nutritional and health needs of livestock, resulting in high mortality rates and low productivity. Therefore, efforts need to be made to increase the buffalo population to encourage an increase in the number of farmers in Pampangan Sub-district, one of which is through a survey to identify the potential for development. This study aims to identify the potential of buffalo livestock development in Pampangan Sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency using Location Quotient (LQ) analysis to support sustainable breeder development. The samples used in this study are buffalo cattle in Pampangan Sub-district through Location Quotient (LQ) analysis, characteristics of farmers, and rearing systems. The research was conducted in three villages, namely Bangsal, Kuro, and Pampangan villages. The results showed that in the three villages 92.31% of farmers were at productive age (15-64 years), but 46.15% only had elementary education and as many as 53.85% had 5-20 years of farming experience. The rearing system is still entirely extensive. Buffalo population decreased by 5.94% during 2019-2023 due to poor feed and disease. The highest Loqation Quitient (LQ) analysis of Pampangan sub-district (3.032) makes it a base area, while the other 14 sub-districts are non-base. Strategies to improve feed, management and government support are needed for sustainable development. Keywords: buffalo, development, location quotient, pampangan sub-district.
