Abstract

Corn is a strategic commodity in Indonesia, with its demand increasing every year. This presents a challenge for the government and farmers to optimize production, including utilizing the potential of lebak swamp land with soil amendments such as biochar and lotus compost. This study aims to determine the effect of different doses of biochar and lotus compost on the growth and yield of corn cultivated in lebak swamp soil and to analyze its farming feasibility. The research used a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two treatment factors: biochar lotus and lotus compost. The biochar factor consisted of three treatments: B0 (no biochar), B1 (10 ton ha-1 or 50 g/polybag), and B2 (20 ton ha-1 or 100 g/polybag). The lotus compost factor consisted of four treatments: K0 (no compost), K1 (10 ton ha-1 or 50 g/polybag), K2 (20 ton ha-1 or 100 g/polybag), and K3 (30 ton ha-1 or 150 g/polybag). The observed variables included plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry shoot and root weight at harvest, root length, cob weight, dry kernel weight, weight of 1,000 kernels, and an economic analysis of corn production. The results showed that the combination of biochar and lotus compost had a significant effect on dry shoot weight. Biochar lotus application had a significant to highly significant effect on plant height, fresh and dry shoot weight, leaf area, dry kernel weight, and the weight of 1,000 kernels. Similarly, lotus compost application had a significant to highly significant effect on fresh and dry shoot weight, dry kernel weight, and the weight of 1,000 kernels. A combination of 20 tons ha-1 of biochar lotus and 30 tons ha-1 of lotus compost effectively improved the growth and yield of corn in lebak swamp soil. Corn cultivation with biochar and lotus compost on this land is feasible and economically profitable.
