Abstract
Red betel leaf contains alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, and tannin compounds that have potential for burn wound healing. Red betel leaf extract in this study was formulated into gel dosage forms using different types of gelling agent and concentrations. Formula 1 used Carbopol® 934 1,5%, Formula 2 Carbopol® 934 3%, Formula 3 HPMC 60 SH 3%, and for Formula 4 HPMC 60 SH 6%. Gel evaluation have been characterized through testing of organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, adhesibility, spreadibility, washability, pH, extrudability, stability and irritation. The evaluation result showed that HPMC 60 SH 3% formula had an propriate viscosity of 13333,33± 2081,66 cP, the adhesibility testing was 60 SH 6% formula of 20,40± 4,55 second. The evaluation of spreadibility testing showed that the result in Carbopol® 934 1,5% formula by the average weight 50 g 5,34±0,13 cm, weight 100 g of 5,93±0,25 cm, and weight 200 g of 6,34±0,35 cm, the result of Carbopol® 934 washability was 1,5% by water. The result of pH, extrudability, and stability testing of formula using HPMC 60 SH 3% were by 7,03± 0,08; 3,58±0,39%; 7,03±0,08, there was not sineresis observed as well as no discoloration, odor, and homogeneity that was visible. Draize patch testing done to evaluate the iritation potential of the dosage form. The result of gel testing evaluation showed that there was no irritation on test animals. The result of data analysis using parametric test by one-way ANOVA indicated that HPMC 60 SH 3% gel was the optimum formula.
