Abstract

Nanosilica is silica with a nanoscale size ranging from 1 to 100 nm, which serves to enhance the compressive strength of concrete. Nanosilica can be synthesized from kaolin. The materials used in this study include kaolin and a magnetic stirrer as a mixing tool. This research employs variations in drying times of 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours. Microstructural testing methods, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), were utilized to analyze the extracted products. From the XRD test results, it can be concluded that the longer the drying time the crystals will shrink at a certain time but with increasing drying time the crystal size will get bigger. From the XRF and SEM test results, it can be concluded that drying too fast and drying too long will reduce the silica content. According to tests, the optimum drying time for the synthesis process is 12 hours, which produces silica purity of about 57% with a crystal size of 21.24 nm, composed of 8.83% crystalline and 91.17% amorphous material.
