Abstract

Background: Herbs are widely used by Indonesians as traditional medicine due to easy accesibility, affordable price, and minimal side effects. Therefore, further researchs on herbs are required to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and scientifically tested based on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) until the product can be utilized by broader society. Objective: To identify the trend of herbal research in dentistry in Indonesia over the last 15 years. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using data from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Research Gate for the past 15 years starting from January 2010 to August 2024. Research articles selected based on the inclusion criteria were analyzed and summarized to obtain data on herbal research trends in dentisry in Indonesia. Results: The results showed antibacterial activity is the most commonly investigated therapeutic property in dental research in Indonesia, as most oral disease are caused by bacterial infection. Currently, most herbal studies in dentistry in Indonesia remain at TRL 3, with in vitro experiments being the predominant research approach. Conclusions: Antibacterial activity has been the primary focus of herbal research in dentistry in Indonesia for the last 15 years. Most studies are currently at TRL 3 and only two herbs have progressed to TRL 6.
