Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks malocclusion as the third most common oral health problem after dental caries and periodontal disease. According to the Research and Development Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia reaches 80%, predominantly affecting children aged 9 to 12 years, with global prevalence ranging from 11% to 93%. At the age of 12, children enter the final stage of permanent tooth development and occlusion formation, which increases the risk of malocclusion. Objective: This study aims to assess the orthodontic treatment needs of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 56 Palembang. Methods: A descriptive observational study with a survey design was conducted. The population included 294 students, with a total sample of 125 students selected via total sampling technique. Data were collected through clinical examinations using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).Results Based on the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the IOTN, 30 children (24%) were classified as borderline cases requiring orthodontic treatment, and 22 children (18%) were identified as needing definite treatment. According to the Aesthetic Component (AC), 41 children (33%) required borderline treatment, 22 children (18%) required orthodontic treatment, and 19 children (15%) were in definite need of treatment. The most prevalent malocclusion according to Angle’s classification was Class I 95 children (76%), followed by Class III 28 children (22%), and Class II 2 children (2%).Conclusion: The orthodontic treatment needs among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 56 Palembang show that, based on the DHC, 24% require borderline treatment and 18% require definite treatment. Based on the AC, 33% require borderline treatment, 18% require treatment, and 15% require definite treatment.
