Abstract

This study aims to describe family communication patterns in marriage discussions among female contract teachers at SDIT Robbani Ogan Ilir. The background of this research is the global decline in marriage rates, especially in Indonesia, along with the increasing trend of marriage postponement, the influence of social media content such as "marriage is scary," and the persistence of dysfunctional family systems. In this context, the Family Communication Pattern (FCP) theory is utilized to explore how marriage issues are brought into family discourse, how families respond, and how they engage in communication about the matter. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjects’ experiences in depth. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with female contract teachers who are at a marriageable age but have chosen to delay marriage. The findings show that consensual, pluralistic, and protective family types still exist within Eastern cultural contexts. Families with high conversation orientation provide a safe and supportive space for discussing marriage, whereas closed communication creates barriers to addressing sensitive issues such as marriage. Another key finding of this study is the emergence of four unique communication models within the FCP framework: Pyramid Communication, Sibling-Centric Communication, Vertical-Centric Communication, and Maternal-Focused Communication.
