Abstract

Sexual violence in the entertainment industry is often hidden behind a culture of silence and power inequality, as happened in Bollywood. The #MeToo movement that entered India in 2018 became an important turning point for victims to start voicing their experiences. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, and by using the social movement theory from Sidney Tarrow which includes four main indicators, namely, collective challenges, common goals, social solidarity, and sustainable solidarity. The results of this study show that the #MeToo social movement is not only a tool for social mobilization, but also forms a collective consciousness among Bollywood women and the wider community. The success of the #MeToo social movement in Bollywood can also be seen from: 1). The more victims who dare to speak out is not only 1 to 2 people; 2). The resignation of the perpetrator of sexual violence from the position they hold; 3). The #MeToo movement can show that space, social support and public pressure are very important to change the patriarchal system of power in the entertainment industry, namely Bollywood. This makes #MeToo can show that this social movement is successful in carrying out its role.
