Abstract
Breakdown voltage is an important indicator to determinea quality of the isolation of an insulator, including liquid insulation. Breakdown voltage of liquid insulation is different for each types of oil. There are several things that influencereduction in value of breakdown voltage and insulation qualities of liquid insulator, and some of them are viscosity, water content, sediment, and flash point. Breakdown voltage testing of virgin crude palm oil is intended to determine eligibility of virgin crude palm oil as a liquid insulation. This test uses a pair of electrodes type of mushroom. Tests has done to determine how the effect of viscosity, water content, flash point, the color of the oil and sediment on breakdown voltage value. The test results breakdown voltage of virgin crude palm oil refers to standard IEC 60422. Based on test results and analysis, we know that when we use electrode type of mushroom, there will be decrement value of the breakdown voltage of virgin crude palm oil everytime breakdown voltage occurs. It was caused by increasing levels of water content, viscosity and sediment of the virgin crude palm oil. The highest value of breakdown voltage is 11,1 kV/2,5 mm. This value does not fit with the standard of IEC 60422 which is equal to 30 kV/2,5 mm. From these result the virgin crude palm oil can not be used as an alternative liquid insulation for replacement transformer oil.
