Abstract

The Musi River Estuary is one of the important estuarine areas in South Sumatra, connected to the Bangka Strait and supporting various community activities. Phytoplankton play a vital role as primary producers in aquatic ecosystems and are strongly influenced by physicochemical factors such as salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, currents, and water transparency. The research was conducted in October 2024, with sampling divided into four zones based on salinity gradients. Sampling in each zone was carried out during rising tide conditions, starting from zone 4. The results showed variations in the phytoplankton community structure in each salinity zone, consisting of three classes: Bacillariophyceae (24 genera), Dinophyceae (5 genera), and Chlorophyceae (3 genera with dominant composition from the Bacillariophyceae class, such as Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, and Odontella. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from 27 to 173 cells/L, diversity index from 1.51 to 2.31, evenness index from 0.65 to 1.09, and dominance index from 0.12 to 0.73. The relationship between community structure and environmental parameters indicates that salinity, brightness, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, temperature, and currents have a significant influence. Salinity shows a positive correlation with abundance (r = 0.876) and diversity (r = 0.267), but a negative correlation with dominance (r = -0.650) and evenness (r = -0.740).
