Abstract
Seeds to be used in this research derived from a series of Recurrent Selection of single and double-cross populations between female parents of several Indonesian varieties and introduced male parents of HQPSS accession of Purdue, USA, which was known contained high quality protein and SA-3 accession of CIMMYT, Mexico, which considered tolerant to acid soil. These open pollinated accessions namely GS-5xToray-1; GS-5xToray-2; GS-10xToray-1; GS-10xToray-2, and Toray-1; Toray-2; GS-5; and GS-10. Protein analysis was carried out by independent laboratory of Industrial and Agricultural Products, Ministry of Industry, while their remnant seeds were grown at farm-land area at Indralaya, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. Data were analyzed by using Pearson?s Correlation Methods. The calculations were performed by using computer computation program of Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Results indicated that protein content of those accessions ranged from 8.57 to 9.48 %. There were 3 accessions that contain protein > 9%. Among them, Toray-2 accession was the most potential. This research also revealed un-stability of reduction in protein content in the seeds of double-crossed as compared to single-cross accessions, and the presence of ?inbreeding depression? phenomenon in GS-5 accession. This research showed the correlation coefficients (\ensuremathρ) between protein content and variables observed, range from -0.385 to +0.730. Except for the correlation between protein content and cob length, other values of \ensuremathρ are meaningless, as they are very small and statistically no-different from zero. ____________________________________________________________ Keywords: Correlation, growth, maize, production, protein.
