Abstract

Tanjung Api-Api, located in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, is a strategic coastal area utilized for aquaculture, mangrove ecosystems, and ferry port activities. However, anthropogenic activities such as shipping and the discharge of ballast water have led to pollution and a decline in water quality. Benthic macrozoobenthos, which are sedentary and sensitive to environmental changes, are used as biological indicators of pollution. This study aims to analyze the structure of the macrozoobenthos community and its relationship with the physico-chemical parameters of the water and sediment texture. The results show that the water quality is classified as moderately to heavily polluted but still supports the growth of macrozoobenthos, with temperatures ranging from 29.97–31.2°C, pH 7.49–7.75, dissolved oxygen (DO) 6.67–7.70 mg/l, and salinity 18.67–19.33 ppt. Sediment was dominated by clay, and macrozoobenthos abundance ranged from 1–12 ind/m². Diversity, evenness, and dominance indices ranged between 0–1.2, 0–0.62, and 0.35–1, respectively. PCA analysis indicated that Station 1 was influenced by pH, DO, and salinity, which were associated with diversity, while Station 3 was dominated by sandy substrate and Gastropods (73%). Community structure varied among stations, with the highest diversity at Station 1 and the lowest at Stations 3 and 4, which were dominated by a single species.
