Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between social support and ambivalence over emotional expression in individuals with experiences of violence. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a relationship between social support and ambivalence over emotional expression. The subjects in this study were individuals with experiences of violence totaling 238 people and 62 people for the trial taken using incidental sampling techniques. The measuring instrument used refers to the ambivalence over emotional expression factor based on the theory of King and Emmons (1990) with a reliability value of 0.918, while for social support it refers to the components based on the theory of Cutrona and Russell (1987) with a reliability value of 0.935. The data obtained were analyzed using Spearman Rank’s test with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics version 26.0 for Windows. The results showed a significance value of 0.004 (p < 0.05) with a correlation coefficient of -0.187 which indicates that there is a negative relationship between social support and ambivalence over emotional expression These results support the research hypothesis and indicate that ambivalence over emotional expression is negatively correlated with social support in individuals with experiences of violence, which means that when the level of social support is high, the level of ambivalence over emotional expression will be low.
