Abstract

Connections are critical structural elements in building frameworks, as they can serve as the initial trigger for progressive collapse that affects the overall structural system. This issue is particularly significant in cold-formed steel (CFS) structures, which have thin-walled sections prone to buckling at early stages of deformation. This study extends research on CFS, focusing specifically on double-channel sections connected using haunched gusset plates (HGP), a type of connection widely used due to its fast and easy installation. Previous experimental studies showed that double-channel sections are prone to failure from lateral-torsional buckling caused by excessive beam deflection. In this research, a numerical analysis was conducted using ANSYS software based on geometric dimensions, material properties, and previous experimental data. Following the validation of the comparison between experimental and numerical results, a modified configuration using sigma purlin sections was proposed. The connection types were classified based on strength, stiffness, and ductility.Sigma purlin was selected due to its greater efficiency in bending, shear performance, and web failure resistance, as well as its ability to minimize torsional effects. Validation using the Finite Element Method (FEM) against experimental data showed that the double-channel connection had deviations of 1.3%, 0.43%, and 7.55% in rotation, deflection, and ultimate stiffness, respectively. In contrast, the modified sigma purlin connection demonstrated reductions in rotation and deflection of 36.81% and 41.23%, respectively, along with a 58.24% increase in ultimate stiffness compared to the double-channel type. FEM results indicated that both connection types are classified as semi-rigid in stiffness, partial-strength in capacity, and ductile in behavior. Therefore, the use of sigma purlin sections can significantly improve the resilience of semi-rigid connections while reducing the risk of sudden failure.
